Problematic Children

Originally, I was going to do this post on how much I prefer Eun Bi with Tae Kwang, instead of Yi An (the mainstream couple) from Who Are You: School 2015. But, after watching Episode 4, I decided to do a post just based on Tae Kwang and his story (as we know it so far). Eun Bi's part will, however, still come in.

First of all, at the beginning of the series, we were introduced to Gong Tae Kwang when he was literally climbing down the side of the hospital when he was refused to be discharged. So, as most would infer from this, Tae Kwang is the sort of person who you wouldn't really want to get involved with. And that did stick with us for the next episodes as well. Because as soon as he got back into school, he'd already gotten into a fight with someone. Unfortunately, even though Tae Kwang does fight a lot, he isn't all that good at it. Hence why he was in the hospital... Or so we thought.

As it is later revealed to us, he was in the mental institution for being a "problematic child" as quoted by the title and his father - the director of his school. Tae Kwang's father had admitted him to hospital just so that he wouldn't have to see him, and he kept paying money for him to remain in the ward (although Tae Kwang's behaviour did help with that process). But in a news article, he had once said "A problematic child should be embraced" when all he is doing is pushing Tae Kwang further away. This does not help Tae Kwang improve his personality.

It's also not helped that Tae Kwang hasn't seen his mother in 10 years since she divorced his father. Tae Kwang is easily able to keep tabs on his mother as she is a popular model and actress, and had just announced her third wedding, but not being able to speak or see his only mother is not a way to go. His only comfort at home is his games and the housekeeper who keeps him company during dinner.

This is why he still goes to school - to shut away his life. And he can't tell anyone about his problems because either everyone is scared of him, or wants nothing to do with him. And so enters Lee Eun Bi. Since she is taking the role of Eun Byul (her twin sister) at school, she can't tell anybody that Eun Byul has supposedly died in her place. Both Eun Bi and Tae Kwang share secrets that no one else can know, which creates a special link between the two.

One day, Tae Kwang tells Eun Bi the secret that he is the "idiotic son of the respected Director of Sekang High School." Eun Bi doesn't know whether or not to believe him, but she tells him her secret the next day anyway. She says "Don't believe anything I tell you. I'm a total liar." Which is then followed by "The thing is... my name is Go Eun Byul." This is another of telling Tae Kwang that she isn't who is says she is - she isn't Go Eun Byul. Tae Kwang somewhat believes her, and follows up with the secret that his mother is the famous Song Hee Young.

Later that same day, some kids start complaining and making of fun of Song Hee Young. Even though Tae Kwang hasn't seen her in so many years, he still cares for her. And again, he gets into another fight. Eun Bi tries to intervene but gets rejected away by Tae Kwang, leading her to get hurt. After the fight is broken up, he walks towards Eun Bi wanting to check if she is alright, only to have Yi An throw him back. His face was filled with absolute worry and guilt for Eun Bi, that I wanted to hug him.

When Tae Kwang's father returns home, you can tell he is furious with Tae Kwang's actions. He asks why he does such stupid things and threatens to send him abroad. This reminds Tae Kwang of the time when his parents were getting the divorce papers ready on his birthday, when his mother asks his father that if getting married was a mistake, if having Tae Kwang was a mistake (in which he overheard his conversation). To which he repeats to his father "Didn't you say this is your punishment? That giving birth to me was a sin? Then shouldn't you continue to receive your punishment? I guess I can just die!" His father slaps him across the face with these remarks (even though Tae Kwang has been quite viciously beaten up beforehand).

By taking out his frustration, he goes on his scooter, enters the middle of a busy road amd screams his heart out. He later runs into Eun Bi when she is out shopping, and asks if she is alright as he never had the chance earlier. She replied with "I'm fine so don't worry." Which he insinuated to mean "I'm not okay so pay attention to me," as Eun Bi said she lies about everything. He continues by saying "The thing is... today I really want to be alone." Which of course, meant that he wanted some company (using Eun Bi's choice of lying and words).

After this, they spent some time together by Tae Kwang teaching Eun Bi how to ride the scooter and having a good laugh together. During these few moments, Tae Kwang recieved from Eun Bi what he needed in a few minutes than what his parents never gave him in 16 years.

Here is a video that sums this up pretty well:

The reason why Tae Kwang is a "problematic child" is simply because of his parents. He was never taught how to act or behave, and his growing up without either of his parents led him to be a delinquent and unable to make friends. And so, the moral of this post is:

Treat people with love and attention, and don't involve them with your problems.

Also, here is a little something for my original post idea of my non-mainstream couple of Lee Eun Bi and Gong Tae Kwang: At first I liked Eun Bi with Yi An but then I realized they're more like fairy tale... When she's with him, she pretends that there's no problems and everything is perfect... but relationships don't work like that. I know that the relationship between Eun Bi and Tae Kwang seems really messy and complicated, but it also seems more real to me. They're both broken and they grew up unloved. They both can fix each other and be happy together. Did you guys notice the way Tae Kwang looked at Eun Bi when he accidentally hurt her arm? There's no boy who will look at you like that, only boys who really care about you can do it! This is why they deserve to be together at the end of the drama. They seem to understand each other and so they can face the problems together. If these two became a couple, their love will be eternal! That kind of difficult, extraordinary and life-changing love!

Sorry for the long post, I needed a good rant about my adorable babies. Also, starting a new page on my blog, entitled Life Messages, with this as one of its entries!
